Weighed anchor at 0630 Hrs, beautiful morning, sailing comfortably....until at 0800 Hrs the wind dropped. Motor sailed to Santorini, arriving in Vlikadha, south end of the island for a safe harbour to leave Kinabalu while we explore. Rod Heikell had said it would be a tricky entrance, silted up from the winter storms and he was right! But we're becoming more intrepid as the months pass and when the depth gauge registers 00.00 we don't panic...well not outwardly ;) And we touched the bottom, just a little touch, before berthing alongside the outer quay and later with a charter Bavaria rafted up next to us.
But what a place! We really weren't prepared for such an experience. Imagine the crater of a volcano 6 miles x 4 miles filled with water and the bare black island in the centre, effectively the volcanic "plug". For many years the island has been host to tourists who arrive by plane, ferry and cruise ship to be transported to the rim of the caldera by cable car and then to a selection of exclusive boutique hotels built on a precipice.

One lonely sailing yacht stern to against the quay! |

In awe of the vastness of it all |

Went back to wait for the sunset |
