Regattas aren't all about winning....but more about participating, making new friends and having fun! The 24th Ionian International Sailing Week, conducted under ISAG rules and ORC Offshore Special Regulations for Category 4 racing, was competitive, to say the least, with boats sailing long distances to join the camaraderie. 3 races, 45nm and 1 of 23nm were all sailed in testing conditions.
Can you imagine battling in light winds for ten hours, only to be becalmed at midnight. With a time limit of 15 hours under a punishing "Performance Line" system, still 25nm to go and no hint of a new breeze, a finish seemed out of the question. It was with heavy hearts that we started the engine in the knowledge that we would see a DNF in the results for the second race to Lyxouri. This was to cost us a podium result for the regatta, but we were proud of a 4th place overall at the final prizegiving in Zakinthos.
